Let’s Get Messy! Baby Bib Pattern

Materials:

4.25 mm hook

Peaches & Creme cotton yarn-

MC- Pastel Pink Color #1421 (100% Cotton Yarn. Worsted Weight. 120yds/109m; 2.5oz/70.9gm)

CC- Black Currant Color #1318 (100% Cotton Yarn. Worsted Weight. 120yds/109m; 2.5oz/70.9gm)

yarn needle

Gauge– 4sc and 4 rows= 1 inch

Finished dimensions= about 7 1/2 ” by 8 1/2″, excluding neck piece

Instructions:

Beginning at bottom of bib with MC, ch 21

Row 1- sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, ch 1, turn (20 sc) (right side)

Row 2- 2sc in 1st sc, sc in ea sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn (22 sc)

Row 3-6- repeat row 2 until there are 30 sc

Rows 7-30- sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (30 sc)

1st Neck Piece-

Row 31- sc in first 6 sc only, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 32- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 4 sc, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 33- sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 34- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 3 sc, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 35- rep row 33 (4 sc)

Row 36- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 2 sc, ch 1, turn (3 sc)

Row 37- rep row 33 (3 sc)

Row 38- sc2tog, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Row 39-40  rep row 33 (2 sc)

Fasten off.

2nd Neck Piece-

With right side facing, attach yarn in 6th sc from the left, ch 1

Row 31- sc in same st as join, sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 32- sc in ea of the first 4 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 33- sc in ea sc across (5 sc)

Row 34- sc in ea of the first 3 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 35- rep row 33 (4 sc)

Row 36- sc in ea of the first 2 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (3 sc)

Row 37- rep row 33 (3 sc)

Row 38- sc in the first sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Row 39-40- rep row 33 (2 sc)

Do not fasten off.

Trim & Ties-

With RS facing, attach CC to bottom corner of bib.

Round 1- Ch 1, 2 sc in first loop, 1 sc in each of the next 18 loops of the Foundation Chain, 2 sc in last loop of the Foundation Chain, then evenly sc around the entire bib and neck pieces. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2- sc in each sc around to top sc of 1st neck piece, (ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch down, sc in next sc at the top of the neck piece), sc in each sc around to top of next piece and repeat ( ), sc in each sc around the remainder of the bib and join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing touches- weave in all loose ends.

Polka Dots-

Using CC, make a Magic Ring

Round 1- ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join to first sc with sl st (6 sc)

Round 2- ch 1, 2 sc in ea sc around (12 sc), join with sl st to first sc, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew to bib.

Materials:

4.25 mm hook

Peaches & Creme cotton yarn- “Ivy League” Color #1235 (100% Cotton Yarn. Worsted Weight; 706 yds/645m; 14oz/400gm)

25 mm (1 inch) button (optional- instructions included to make ties instead of using buttons)

Gauge– 4sc and 4 rows= 1 inch

Finished dimensions= about 8 inches long, by about 7 inches wide (excluding neck piece)

Instructions:

Bib #1- buttoned bib (pictured top middle)

Beginning at bottom of bib, ch 21

Row 1- sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, ch 1, turn (20 sc) (right side)

Row 2- 2sc in 1st sc, sc in ea sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn (22 sc)

Row 3- sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn

Rows 4- 8- repeat rows 2 and 3 until there are 28 sc across (Rows 4, 6 and 8 will be a repeat of row 2, and rows 5 and 7 will be a repeat of row 3)

Row 9- repeat row 3

Row 10- repeat row 2 (30 sc)

Rows 11-30- repeat row 3

1st Neck Piece-

Row 31- sc in the first 6 sc only, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 32- sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 33- 37 repeat row 32 (6 sc)

Row 38- 2 sc in first sc, sc in the next 3 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 39- sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 33-37 repeat row 32 (6 sc)

Row 38- sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 41- repeat row 39

Do not fasten off.

Trim & Button Hole- Turn work so that right side is facing, ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 4, sk next 4 sc, sc in last sc of row (this creates the button hole), then sc down side edge of neck piece and bib (all 48 rows= 48 sc), in the 20 loops from the foundation ch (= 20 sc), then up the other side edge of the bib and neck piece (again, all 48 rows=48 sc), across the last row of sc of the neck piece (=6 sc), and then down the inside edge of the neck piece (18 sc), next in the unused sc of row 30 of the bib portion (18 sc), and finally up the inside edge of the next neck piece (18 sc). Join with a sl st to the first sc (the sc before your ch 4 for the button hole).

Final touches- tightly sew button to the top edge of the neck piece that doesn’t have the button hole, weave in all loose ends.

Bib #2- ties (pictured right center)- the ties on this bib are centered in the middle of the top of the neck piece, unlike the positioning of them in bib #3.

Follow instructions for Bib #1, from Row 1 through Row 30

1st Neck Piece-

Row 31- sc in the first 6 sc only, ch 1, turn

Row 32- sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Rows 33- 36- repeat row 32

Row 37- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 2 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 38- sc2tog 2x’s

Fasten off.

2nd Neck Piece-

With right side facing, attach yarn to 6th sc from left, on row 30 of bib section, ch 1

Row 31- sc in same st as join, and sc in next 5 sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 32- sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 33-36- repeat row 32

Row 37- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 2 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 38- sc2tog 2x’s, ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Do not fasten off.

Ties & Trim-

Row 39- sc in 1st sc, ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch after (=40 sl sts), sc in last sc of row 38. Do not turn, but instead continue to sc down side edge of neck piece (=8 sc) and bib (=30 sc), in the 20 unused loops of the foundation ch (=20 sc), up the other edge of the bib (=30 sc) and neck piece (8 sc). Next, sc in the first sc of the top of the next neck piece, ch 41, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch after (=40 sl sts), then sc in the last sc of row 38. Continue to sc down the inside edge of the neck piece (=8 sc), in each sc of row 30 of the bib (=18 sc), and then up the final inside edge of the first neck piece (=8 sc). Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

Final touches- weave in all loose ends.

Bib #3- variation of ties version (pictured bottom)- this bib is almost identical to bib #2, except that the ties are positioned along the outer edge of the neck piece, rather than in the middle of the neck piece)

Follow instructions for Bib #1, from Row 1 through Row 30

1st Neck Piece-

Row 31- sc in first 6 sc only, ch 1, turn (6 sc)

Row 32- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 4 sc, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 33- sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 34- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 3 sc, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 35- rep row 33 (4 sc)

Row 36- sc2tog, sc in ea of the next 2 sc, ch 1, turn (3 sc)

Row 37- rep row 33 (3 sc)

Row 38- sc2tog, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Row 39- rep row 33 (2 sc)

Row 40- sc2tog (1 sc)

Fasten off.

2nd Neck Piece-

With right side facing, attach yarn in 6th sc from the left, ch 1

Trim & Ties-

Row 41- sc in the only sc, ch 41. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch after (=40 sl sts), sl st in top of sc from the starting of your ch 41, then sc down the side edge of neck piece (=10 sc) and bib (=30 sc), across the 20 unused loops of the foundation ch (=20 sc), up the other side edge of the bib (=30 sc) and next neck piece (=10 sc). Sc in the one sc from row 41, then ch 41. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and then in ea ch after (=40 sl st). Sl st in the top of the sc from the starting of your ch 41, then sc down the inside edge of the neck piece (=10 sc), in ea sc from row 30 of the bib (=18 sc), and up the inside edge of the first neck piece (=10 sc). Sl st to the beginning sc, fasten off.

Finishing touches- weave in all loose ends.
