Child’s Ribbed Hat (my revised version)

Child’s Ribbed Hat

Because I revised this hat pattern from the original, which I wrote about here, I cannot call it my own pattern. So, I will just call it my revised version 🙂

Materials Used:

Caron Simply Soft Brites yarn- 1 skein Grape, 1 skein Blue Mint

5 mm crochet hook

Yarn needle

Finished Measurements:

*This hat is made to fit size 2-4 kids. The ribbing will be about 16 inches unstretched, and will stretch to about 20 inches.  Unfortunately, I failed to write down the gauge before giving this hat to it’s new owner. However, I used the same size hook for both the hoodie and this hat, so if you are making the set, the hook you use for the hoodie should be good for making this hat.

Abbreviations Used (US Terminology):

Ch- chain

Sc- single crochet

st(s)- stitch(es)

Blo- back loop only

Dec- decrease (sc2tog/single crochet two stitches together)

Instructions:

With Blue Mint, ch 11

Row 1- sc in the second ch from the hook and in each of the next ch, ch 1, turn (10 sc)

Row 2- working in the blo, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (10 sc)

Rows 3- 71- repeat Row 2

Row 72- still working in the blo, sc in each sc across (10 sc). Fasten off.

Begin the Crown of the hat:

Join Grape to the top edge of the ribbing (with RS facing). **you will now be working in both loops of each st again!

Row 1- Make 72 evenly spaced sc across the edge (1 sc for each row of ribbing made), ch 1, turn (72 sc)

Row 2- sc across, ch 1, turn (72 sc)

Repeat Row 2 for 3 inches (3 inches from the color change/beginning of the crown)

Shaping the Crown:

(RS)- Row 1- (10 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (66 sc)

Row 2- sc across, ch 1, turn (66 sc)

Row 3- (9 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (60 sc)

Row 4- (8 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (54 sc)

Row 5- (7 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (48 sc)

Row 6- (6 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (42 sc)

Row 7- (5 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (36 sc)

Row 8- (4 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (30 sc)

Row 9- (3 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (24 sc)

Row 10- (2 sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (18 sc)

Row 11- (sc, dec) repeat across, ch 1, turn (12 sc)

Row 12- dec across (6 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Next, weave the yarn tail through the last 6 sts and pull tightly so that the top of the hat is closed. Then, turn the hat inside out and matching colors and rows, sew the seam closed. Weave in all yarn tails.

Optional- make a pom pom (using both colors together) and attach it to the top of the hat.
