Beanies For Everyone- Free Pattern

This past week I’ve had hats on the brain. I have a lot of styles and ideas that I want to try out, but I figured that before (or if) I do any of those, I should start with the basics.

This beanie pattern is great for a beginner, or even anybody really, as it works up relatively quickly, and really easily.  It is made using only single crochet stitches.

The sizing is simple. I’ve created the pattern so that each age or size group varies by only 1 inch (with the exception of the premie, small newborn and large newborn, which are sized in increments of 2 inches). The hats come in 12 different sizes, ranging from Premie to Adult Large. So long as you follow the gauge of 4 sc to 1 inch, your hat will turn out the right size.

Unlike many other beanies that work the crown of the hat flat, this pattern increases every other round, beginning on Round 7, which provides a bit of shape to the crown. I do this with most of my hats to accommodate the natural slope of the head.

The lengths shown in the pattern are only guidelines. If you are able to, I would suggest you measure the recipients head before you begin making a hat.

There is no brim or cuff around the brow of the hat. The final round of sc is the end. But they can be customized easily, whether you add a contrasting color for the final round, a hdc or dc round for the final round, or even work the hat in stripes or finish it off by adding a pom pom and/or appliques, flowers, animal ears & faces, buttons…whatever. It’s completely up to you.

Adult Large- Hat Circumference 23”, hat length 9.5”

Notes:

  • The hats are worked in the round, in one continuous spiral. Do not join at the end/beg of each round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of where your rounds end and begin.
  • Beginning on Round 7, increases are made every other round (with the round in between increase rounds being worked even) to accommodate the natural slope of the crown of the head.
  • Up until Round 11 there are 8 increases in each increase round. Beginning on Round 11 only 4 increases are made on each increase round. This helps to get a closer fit for each age group.
  • These hats will stretch about 1’’ when worn.
  • The lengths shown are what I recommend, however, if you are able to, I suggest you measure the hat-wearer’s head before you start making a hat.
